DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
GRADE: 13 FLSA STATUS: Exempt
NATURE OF POSITION
Responsible for overseeing the coordination and direction of the K–8 Religious Education Program, with additional responsibilities as agreed upon by the Pastor. This would normally be a full time position in a large parish. A contract can be issued at the discretion of the pastor and after reference to the Diocesan Director of Religious Education.
REPORTING FUNCTION
Reports directly to the Pastor.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Duties may include any or all of the following:
Coordinate Faith Formation Activities K-8, including special sacramental formational activities (e.g. retreats).
Proposes and initiates programs necessary for the development of the parish religious education program.
Implements diocesan religious education policies in the parish religious education program.
Recruit and maintain catechists and other catechetical volunteers.
Ensures all catechetical personnel are in compliance with Diocesan Youth Protection policies.
Accurately and in a timely manner, complete and submit Diocesan Religious Education Census form and all other required diocesan forms.
Make diocesan religious education curriculum available to parish catechists and oversee its implementation.
Prepare and see to the implementation of parish sacramental catechesis preparation.
See to on-going formation of catechetical staff through diocesan and parish events, catechetical classes and workshops, approved catechetical resources, catechist in-service days, and, when necessary, retreats/days of reflection.
Evaluate catechists and make adjustments as necessary.
Adopt Textbooks from USCCB text conformity listing.
Plan and execute all catechetical parent meetings.
Schedules, disseminates and manages the annual parish religious education calendar.
Responsible for conducting registration of students in Religious Education Program.
Assist in the preparation and management of parish religious education budget in consultation with pastor, parish counsel and / or parish religious education board.
Reviews, evaluates and organizes inventories and orders essential religious education materials and supplies.
Keeps student and catechist files up-to-date and ensures that necessary forms are present therein.
Generate appropriate communications and publicity regarding catechetical programs.
Sees to management and security of the building during religious education classes and activities
Provide office coverage during religious education sessions.
Plan and implement diocesan chastity program.
Plan & manage student hours of mercy program (where applicable).
Plan and execute vacation bible school program (if applicable), ensuring all staff are in compliance with Diocesan Youth Protection policies.
Teach courses for basic catechist certification and other adult religious education courses.
Coordinate or assist with the high school religious education program.
Coordinate or assist with parish RCIA program, including RCIA Adapted for children.
POSITION ANALYSIS
The Director of Religious Education (DRE) is a full-time or part-time, salaried or stipend employee responsible for administering the parish K-8 Religious Education program and other parish catechetical programs under the supervisory direction of the Pastor with work responsibilities as agreed upon by the Pastor and the DRE.
This position requires a mature, professional, responsible, committed individual with excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, administrative, managerial and interpersonal skills. Must be a Catholic in good standing and have a working knowledge of Church teaching, Catholic sacramental theology and practices of the Church and diocese. Must be versed in the stages of human and faith development.
EDUCATIONAL/WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
The DRE should have a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree in Theology, Catechetics, Religious Education, or a related field. DRE’s should have a minimum of three years experience as a parish catechist prior to being hired as a parish DRE. They should also have attained the Basic Catechetical Certificate and have attained (or be in the process of attaining) the Advanced Catechetical Certificate.
